It is not surprising that effectiveness falls through stress, burnout, a lack of clarity and purpose and over-thinking. After all, humans are designed to seek certainty and safety.
 

But

Not everyone is suffering. Some are thriving in the same challenging circumstances. A significant experiment in the U.S. showed that it was not the circumstances that were the problem but the individual's perception of those circumstances.

Humans live not in a world of objective reality, but in their perception of reality.

See this and life becomes instantly easier.

 

Because we do not directly experience the world.

We experience our perception of the world and our place within it.

 

It's an inside job

Our experience is created internally.

 

and while we continue to look for the solution outside, we will be doomed to failure. 


This means that how we feel is not created by the people around us.

Nor is it created by the situation and circumstances in which we find ourselves.

It is not the length of our to-do list that stresses us, or the behaviour of our colleagues, but how we perceive them.

 

Consider these scenarios.

You and I go to the cinema to watch a film. You love it and I don't.

Why is that? Same film. Same time. Different experience.

 

You find a colleague, boss, employee to be really irritating.

Some days you lose your temper with them, other days you let it go.

Why is that? Same person. Different response.

​

We go to a restaurant together.

Afterwards you talk about the group on the next table. I didn't notice them.

I talk about the picture above the bar. You didn't notice it.

We experienced the restaurant differently.

So what?

​

Well, imagine a leader, who was unwilling to hold themselves and their people accountable, because they were afraid of the consequences. Or averse to giving feedback. Or thinking that, as the boss, they should know all the answers.

 

Imagine a salesperson being unable to present effectively for fear of looking foolish. Or unwilling to ask for commitment. Or afraid of what might happen if they constructively challenged their client's approach.

 

Or simply anyone so stressed they couldn't perform effectively.
